Dear Friends,
Imagine…. 53 years ago, there was no affordable childcare program in our town. For many working parents this meant that their young children were often left home alone, or in vehicles while they worked.
But in 1969 a group of concerned citizens banded together to create the East Hampton Head Start Program. This childcare initiative was a direct attack on a root cause of poverty…. And it was the beginning of what is today, the Eleanor Whitmore Early Childhood Center.
Today, we are the only licensed, non-profit childcare center on Long Island addressing the critical need for affordable childcare in a region considered a childcare desert.
We teach and care for more than 100 children from ages 18 months to 4 years old of working families - 10 hours a day - 7:30 AM - 5:30 PM, 5 days a week, 12 months a year
Today, we provide scholarships to be sure that all can attend; serve two meals and two healthy snacks daily because nutrition is important to healthy brain development in young children
For families who need extra help, we run a food pantry to assure that all in the family receive proper nutrition
Affiliated with the National Association of Education for Young Children (NAEYC), we were awarded New York State’s Highest honor in 2022, The Empire Award for 50+ years of service.
This is possible for only one reason – private donations - your gift matters. Imagine the difference you can make to hundreds of working families each year.
We are so grateful for your support.
