Eleanor Whitmore Early Childhood Center has a long history of service to the children and families of East Hampton. For 50 years The Center has been providing quality learning experiences through innovative programming and partnerships that build a strong foundation for learning for all children in our community.
Center is Established
The Center is established as a Head Start Program of the East Hampton Organization for Community Action through, a group of local concerned citizens. It opened in a building made available by Boys Harbor in Northwest to provide child care services for working families in our community.
The Center Gets a New Home
A residence is donated by the Marden family to become The Center’s new home at 2 Gingerbread Lane Extension in the Village of East Hampton, our present address.
- Dr. Willet F. Whitmore donates $500,000 to The Center in memory of Betsy Cromartie Whitmore. The donation kicked off a capital campaign to construct the present building.
- Jane Rivkin spearheads the drive to raise the rest of the money to complete the construction.
