The Center Gets a New Name

We’ve changed our name but not our Mission!

On October 5, 2013 a celebration was held to rename the East Hampton Day Care Learning Center to the Eleanor Whitmore Early Childhood Center.

In a press release, Board Co-Chair Cornelia Randolph said, “East Hampton Day Care Learning Center has been providing high quality early education to children in our community for decades, including the Pre-Kindergarten program for the East Hampton Union Free School District, and we will continue to do so. We are changing our name but not our mission. The new name reflects more accurately our mission – we are not just a day care center, but a center for early childhood learning, growth and development, where the whole child is nurtured and cared for by our professionally trained teaching staff. And we are thrilled that we can also honor one of our founding Board members, Eleanor Whitmore, whose dedication to the education of young children is unmatched. Eleanor has been central to this organization since the beginning and we are so pleased to recognize her dedication with the new name.”

Program Director Maureen Wikane, who has led the Center’s program development for 17 years, agrees “The importance of early education, of reaching developmental milestones and gaining early literacy skills has received a lot of attention in recent years. We have always been at the forefront of implementing best practices in early education. Our new name reflects this philosophy. I have enjoyed working with Eleanor for nearly twenty years, and she truly is the heart and soul of the Center. It is wonderful to honor her in this way.”

The renaming and dedication event was held at the Center with supporters, faculty and leadership all coming together to celebrate and honor Eleanor Whitmore.
